S&P 500, Dow and Nasdaq Close at Records as Small-Caps Outperform
The S&P 500, Dow and Nasdaq all closed at record highs on August 4 as small-cap stocks outperformed, widening the rally beyond AI megacap earnings.
The S&P 500, Dow Jones Industrial Average and Nasdaq Composite all closed at record highs on August 4, with the Russell 2000 small-cap index climbing 1.8% on the day and extending its lead over the large-cap benchmarks for the year to date.
What happened
The S&P 500 rose 1.8% to 7,736.52, the Dow added 907 points (1.7%) to close at 54,085.88, and the Nasdaq Composite jumped 2.6% to 26,584.99. All three closed at records. The Philadelphia Semiconductor Index gained 6% as chipmakers rallied alongside AI-linked earnings.
Gains were broad-based rather than concentrated in a handful of mega-cap technology names. The Russell 2000 is up 22.4% for the year, compared with 13% for the S&P 500, 12.5% for the Dow and 14.4% for the Nasdaq: a wider gap between small and large caps than earlier in 2026.
Three forces converged:
- Corporate earnings beat expectations. Caterpillar posted quarterly sales above $20bn for the first time, and Palantir raised its full-year guidance after commercial and US government revenue both grew sharply.
- Oil prices fell. Brent crude dropped more than 5% to below $80 a barrel after Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent said a deal to reopen the Strait of Hormuz to shipping could be reached within days. Terms are not final: a Reuters report the same morning said Iran expects to retain control over inbound traffic through the strait, a point Bessent disputed.
- Bond yields eased, helped by the drop in oil and the prospect of lower shipping-driven inflation risk.
Why it matters
A rally led by small-caps rather than the narrow group of AI-linked mega-caps that has driven most of 2026's gains changes the composition of index returns, not just their size. Investors holding broad index funds or ETFs tracking the S&P 500 have had returns dominated by a handful of technology names for most of the year. A small-cap-led advance spreads gains across a wider set of sectors and balance sheets less exposed to AI capital-spending cycles.
For investors tracking a diversified portfolio, that distinction matters for concentration risk. A portfolio weighted toward large-cap technology carries different downside exposure than one with meaningful small-cap allocation. Platforms like Findex consolidate holdings across brokers, private assets and manual entries into a single net worth view, making shifts like this visible instead of buried across separate account statements.
What to watch next
Whether the Strait of Hormuz agreement holds is the nearest-term catalyst for oil prices and, by extension, bond yields. Iran's public position on toll control and inbound traffic still diverges from the terms Bessent described, and no signed agreement was in place as of Tuesday's close.
August and September have historically been more volatile months for US equities. Fisher Investments research on midterm-election years points to fourth-quarter strength once policy uncertainty clears. Small-cap outperformance continuing will depend partly on whether the earnings season, still underway, confirms broader margin resilience beyond the largest AI spenders.
